Kupwara : Renovated Chinar Youth & Women Empowerment Centre at Machhal was formally inaugurated on 26 June 2026, marking a significant milestone in the journey of inclusive development and empowerment for the people of border villages in Machhal Valley, Kupwara district.
An initiative by the Indian Army, two buildings were sponsored by the Rotary Club of Bombay Central, whose generous contribution enabled the creation of a modern, well-equipped facility. In addition, a Carpet Weaving Training Lab was established by the Indian Army in collaboration with the Indian Institute of Carpet Technology, further enriching the Centre’s offerings and preserving traditional craftsmanship.
The upgraded Centre now features a wide range of modern facilities designed to empower the local community. Data Analytics Lab, established with the capacity to train 24 participants aims at promoting job opportunities for the youth aligned with Digital India initiative. Carpet Weaving Lab, developed with expert support from the Indian Institute of Carpet Technology, provides opportunities to preserve and promote traditional craftsmanship. Women in the valley are being supported through a dedicated Stitching and Tailoring Lab, aimed at enhancing livelihood skills. To foster innovation and learning, the Centre also houses an Incubation Lab equipped with a library, smart classroom and internet access, ensuring that youth have exposure to digital resources and contemporary knowledge. In addition, a Mini Play Area has been created to support the growth and development of children, making the Centre a truly inclusive space for all age groups.
During the inauguration, it was announced that the Centre would host a diverse range of courses and activities, including Data Analytics, Paper Mache, Food Craft Institute (Jammu) programs for youth, Carpet Weaving, Stitching & Tailoring courses for women and Spoken English & subject-specific coaching for children.
The revamped Centre is expected to provide a major boost to socio-economic growth and prosperity in the region by generating livelihoods and fostering social and economic inclusivity.
Residents, particularly the younger generation, expressed gratitude and optimism, stating that the creation of such a facility had given wings to their dreams and would empower them to upskill for self-employment.
