From Handwara to National Glory: Pakeeza Qureshi Emerges as Kupwara’s Trailblazing Sports Icon

Kupwara, June 27 : In an inspiring story of determination, excellence, and perseverance, Pakeeza Qureshi, daughter of Masood-ul-Hassan Qureshi and a resident of Handwara, has emerged as one of the most accomplished young sportspersons from Jammu and Kashmir. Through her remarkable achievements in sports, social initiatives, and youth leadership, she has become a role model for aspiring athletes across the region.

Pakeeza created history by becoming the first girl from District Kupwara to be honoured by Lieutenant Governor Shri Manoj Sinha for her outstanding contribution to extracurricular activities, a recognition that reflects her dedication beyond the sporting arena.

Over the years, she has represented Jammu and Kashmir at several prestigious national championships and sporting events held in Hyderabad, Mumbai, Khandala, Kerala, Bihar, and Dehradun, consistently bringing laurels to the Union Territory.

Her sporting journey is marked by several notable achievements. She won the Gold Medal in the 65 kg category at the 17th J&K UT Wushu Championship (2023–24) held on 23 December 2023. Days later, she secured a Bronze Medal in Taolu at the Asmita Khelo India Women’s League North Zone in Dehradun on 30 December 2023.

Her excellence earned her recognition from the district administration on multiple occasions. On 26 January 2024, she was honoured by the Additional District Magistrate, Handwara. On 3 February 2024, she received appreciation at Taaruk Open Mic Season 3 for creating a positive impact in society and inspiring youth. She was further honoured as the Best Athlete of District Kupwara on International Women’s Day (11 March 2024).

Beyond sports, Pakeeza has actively contributed to social awareness. On 27 May 2024, she featured in the environmental documentary “Plastic Shahmaar”, filmed in Gurez under the direction of renowned filmmaker Onir, highlighting the importance of environmental conservation.

Recognising her influence among young people, the district administration appointed her as a Young District Election Icon. She was honoured by Deputy Commissioner Kupwara, Ms. Ayushi Sudan, on National Voters’ Day (25 January 2025) and was again felicitated on Republic Day (26 January 2025) as the Best Young Woman Athlete and Inspiring District Election Icon.

Continuing her journey of excellence, Pakeeza was appointed Ambassador of the Jammu & Kashmir Pickleball Association on 3 September 2025, reflecting her growing stature in the sporting community.

In March 2026, she added another milestone by winning the Gold Medal in the Senior Girls’ 48 kg category at the 19th UT State Wushu Championship, held at Bhagwati Nagar, Jammu, from 25–29 March 2026.

Her dedication and achievements also earned her admission to Lovely Professional University under the Sports Quota, along with a 100% scholarship, opening a new chapter in her academic and sporting career.

Pakeeza Qureshi’s inspiring journey from Handwara to national recognition stands as a shining example of hard work, discipline, and resilience. Her success continues to motivate young athletes, especially girls from border districts, proving that determination and dedication can overcome every challenge and lead to excellence on the national stage.
