Department of Geology & Mining, Kupwara Organises Free Medical Camp at Kachiwara Handwara

Handwara 13 Dec 2025: The Department of Geology & Mining, Kupwara, through Minor Mineral Block No. 2, organised a Free Medical Camp at Kachiwara, Handwara, as part of its commitment towards corporate social responsibility (CSR) and community welfare in mining-affected and adjoining areas.The medical camp was organised in collaboration with the Department of Health Services, Kupwara, with the objective of providing quality healthcare services at the grassroots level.The programme was graced by District Mineral Officer (DMO) Kupwara Mr. Mumtaz Ahmad, Block Medical Officer (BMO) Handwara Dr. Ishrat Choudhary, and Chairman Social Justice JKUT Ab Rashid Shah, who attended the camp as distinguished guests. On the occasion, the guests were warmly received and welcomed by Reyaz Ahmad Sofi and Irshid Sofi with garlands and flower bouquets.A dedicated team of doctors and paramedical staff provided expert medical consultations, free health check-ups, personalised health guidance, and free medicines to the beneficiaries. A large number of families from Kachiwara and surrounding areas availed the medical services during the camp.Speaking on the occasion, District Mineral Officer Kupwara Mr. Mumtaz Ahmad described the initiative as a welcome step, stating that it is encouraging to see lease holders coming forward to serve the community. He emphasised that organising medical camps in leased-out blocks should be mandatory to safeguard the welfare of people residing in mining areas. He further remarked that when lease holders operate manually and responsibly, the environment remains largely unaffected.The DMO further informed that during his three-year tenure as District Mineral Officer, Kupwara, no complaints have been received against this particular block holder, and appreciated their efforts, stating that they are doing commendable work for society. He added that the medical camp witnessed voluntary participation from the public, with people attending wholeheartedly to avail the healthcare services.The dignitaries inspected the arrangements, interacted with patients and medical staff, and appreciated the initiative taken by the Mining Department to address the healthcare needs of local communities. They reiterated that such programmes strengthen community trust and ensure sustainable development alongside mining activities.The camp witnessed an encouraging response from the local population and concluded with a resolve to continue similar public welfare and health outreach programmes in the future.
